Join Laura Brodersen, AIA, Lead Project Architect and Gerardo Gandy, AIA, Brand Designer from Gensler who will speak to the design approach, design experience, challenges, solutions of the Moody Center as they tour us around the facility.

The University of Texas at Austin Moody Center

The University of Texas at Austin Moody Center is a 529,000 SF arena with a 15,000+ seating capacity. The Moody Center is designed to host concerts and other events an is also home to the Longhorns men's and women's basketball teams. It includes 2,000 premium seats, 57 loge boxes, 45 suites and 3 premium clubs. The Moody Center is replacing the 45 year old Frank Erwin Events Center and we will be comparing and contrasting the different design approaches, including the use of an outward facing 360 degree glazed façade at the Moody which contrasts with the heavy, concrete drum, that is very inward focused at the Erwin Center.

The design team will discuss the specific constraints of the site and what the outcome was in terms of the form of the building. How it interacts with the site and provides a newly activated plaza space that can be used by all the sports facilities around it for tailgating, food trucks and live music all year round. This new gathering space creates an immersive experience as soon as fans arrive. We will also explore and experience the dramatic height difference from the East to the West which includes a height change of about 40 feet.

The team will also analyze the use of structural steel to the long span roof structure and large roof cantilevers. The large cantilevered roof overhangs create shaded views of the UT campus, downtown Austin and the Capitol. We will explore the use of an innovative , PDV system to condition the space. The Moody Center is the first college venue to implement this Positive Displacement Ventilation system within the seating bowl which results in less energy required for the cooling of the bowl and a higher air quality for patrons.

The team will discuss all of the elements used to create an acoustically robust building that is closer to a performing arts center than a basketball arena.

They will also identify and explain the use of their innovative operable panels that can cover up the entire upper concourse of seating for smaller shows, allowing for flexibility and intimacy not typical among other arena’s.

They will address many of the issues that contributed to their sustainable ethos and LEED submission, including the 360 degree glass façade and use of approximately 400 anodized aluminum fins, which function as solar shades on the exterior of the building.

Learning Objectives

  1. Describe the building systems required for a large basketball arena and events space including energy efficiency, views, reduced heat gain, solar shading and water savings. They will also learn how using a central utilities plant on the UT campus contributes to the overall energy efficiency of the project.
  2. Discuss the design team coordination efforts that took place between the design team and the 14 consultants used on the project.
  3. Identify building design strategies and approaches used to facilitate a fully functional special events venue while accommodating code requirements and accessibility issues.
