It concludes at the Brochstein Pavilion with our reception. (Rice University campus map) Come and see that green is not just the color of Rice University's lush tree canopy, but also the character of numerous recently completed construction and renovation projects. The tour will be lead by Richard Johnson, Rice's Director of Energy and Sustainability, and Susann Glenn, Facilities Engineering and Planning Communications Manager. The tour will begin at the university's most historic and well-known building, Lovett Hall. As this building prepares for its own centennial celebration, Lovett Hall’s “unintentional” sustainable design and architectural excellence, though nearly 100 years old, has served as the design inspiration for past, present and future building projects on the campus. From this site, we visit the recently completed residential halls, Duncan and McMurtry Colleges. These structures are both LEED Gold Certified and boast innovative building systems and technologies that include pre-fabricated bathrooms and infrared room sensors. The tour will continue west to the Oshman Engineering Design Kitchen. This LEED Gold certified renovation project includes a vegetative roof and offers Rice Engineering students of all disciplines a space to collaborate on many levels. Further highlights along the tour route include the recently completed Brockman Hall for Physics (expected to obtain LEED Silver), the Barbara and David Gibbs Recreation and Wellness Center (LEED Silver certified) and the campus retention area. Near this space, the South Power Plant emerges from the Texas prairie and, although, not LEED certified, this amazing building includes many "green" features such as photovoltaic arrays, geothermal wells, green roofs and a HVAC condensate water harvesting. The tour wraps up with a walk past the Wilson House - a newly finished LEED for Homes candidate- and leads to a stroll through the John and Anne Grove which borders the renovated and new wings of Baker and Will Rice Colleges. The Grove ends at the Raymond and Susan Brochstein Pavilion, the final destination on the tour. The Pavilion was designed by Thomas Phifer and continues to win awards for design, landscape and construction. The building is currently among five finalists for the Urban Land Institute Amanda Burden Urban Open Space Award.
