“The Woodlands - Weathering the Storm and Challenges of Sustainable Development”

With:
Barry Goodman, Founder and President, The Goodman Corporation

Robert Heineman, FAIA, VP Planning, The Woodlands Development Co.

Don Norrell, President, The Woodlands Township

The Woodlands Community is recognized as the most successful new town program to emerge from the HUD program initiated in the early 1960’s. Armed with grants and loans from HUD, George Mitchell created a sustainable community which has transcended national downturn and recession, grown to 110 population, and maintained the highest standards for design and construction. Now that the community is transitioning from developer dominated to citizen controlled, will these principles be maintained? Will the Woodlands continue to prosper as a diverse, multi-cultural community?

"Risk and Recovery: Dealing with Disasters, Resources, and Politics”

Featuring THREE Topics. Each topic includes time for table discussions and group discussion.

Topic #1: “UTMB - Destruction and Recovery: Managing a Billion Dollar Re-Construction”

Presenter: Steven LeBlanc, Asst VP, Facilities Risk Management, UTMB-Galveston

Additional Panelists:
  • Emre Ozcan, Vice President, Linbeck
  • Maurice Robison, AIA, Managing Principal-Houston, HDR Architecture
  • Bryan Jones, AIA, Assoc. VP and Project Manager, HDR Architecture
The University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) suffered major damage and destruction of buildings, infrastructure, communications, and utility systems due to Hurricane Ike. As the largest employer for the City of Galveston and one of the nations’ two, level-four bio-labs, UTMB faced both political, economic, and logistical challenges in convincing the State of Texas UT System Board of Regents to maintain facilities on the Island vs. total relocation. Once the political victory had been secured to maintain facilities on the Island, the logistics and management challenges of a fast implementation of over $1 billion of design/construction work became real. How is this being accomplished, what lessons can be learned?

Topic #2: “Addressing Resource Challenges during Economic Recovery”
Moderator:  Marie Hoke, Principal, WHR Architects
Panelists:
  • Bonny McLoud, Principal, Gensler
  • Rick Romito, Partner, KGA Architecture
  • Michael Emmons, President-Houston Region, SpawGlass
  • Bob Richards, President-Central Texas, TDIndustries
While there is still a great deal of uncertainty regarding the current market, most large construction and design firms believe that the market has stopped falling and is showing signs of growth, with 57% saying it will be improving in 12 to 18 months (ref. ENR magazine, June 25, 2012). And, according to U.S. Census data, central Texas cities dominate the fastest-growing cities in the United States, occupying eight of the top 15 spots, evidence that Texas’ rapid population growth is continuing. With this growth comes pressures on the availability of materials, labor, and project design and management resources. What is facing us near-term and long-term? What do capital project stakeholders need to be aware of? How can we best prepare for a potential construction rebound?

Topic #3: “What’s Next? Political Impacts on Healthcare and Education Projects”

Moderator:  Dennis Cheney, Attorney, Bickerstaff Heath Delgado Acosta LLP
Panelists:
  • Andrew Quirk, Senior VP, Healthcare Center of ExcellenceSKANSKA
  • Sid Sanders, Senior Vice President, Construction, Facilities Design and Real Estate, Methodist Hospital
  • David Watkins, Founding Principal, WHR Architects
“Politics” may be a dirty word, but the reality is that political impacts are all around us. Looking forward into 2013 and beyond, what’s next on the horizon for capital projects in Texas? How will the Affordable Care Act affect hospital construction? What are the concerns regarding public funding for schools and higher education? How will all this affect our ability to achieve societal, organizational, and company goals?

Who Should Attend:

  • Do you want to not just "network," but really get to know other professionals involved in capital projects?
